One of the manufactory’s most famous animal figures is Clara: a rhinoceros that the Flemish sculptor Peter Anton von Verschaffelt designed for the Frankenthal manufactory in 1770. With its distinctive horn and typically grim facial expression, its alter ego has featured among the Big Five since 2007. The small porcelain plaque reveals the origin of this pachyderm: Clara’s past can be traced back to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, one of the oldest national parks in South Africa and considered to be the cradle of the large mammals still living in the wild today.
