As is evident from her full-length dress, a robe à l’anglaise such as was fashionable around the mid-18th century, Isabella is a woman of rank. Posing elegantly, she is turned toward the gallant Octavio, who has her heart. The O she makes with the fingers of her right hand betokens her love – amore – while her left hand appeals for a little patience. For Lebanese couturier Elie Saab, Bustelli’s Isabella is “one of the most beautiful figurines of the Commedia dell’Arte, I love her shape and the way she is designed. Her hand gesture reflects aristocracy, pride and confidence – it was a great pleasure for me to dress her.”
The stylish and yet understated design by Saab emphasises the aristocratic noblesse of the figurine, entirely in the vein of his couture designs that are so admired by Hollywood icons. Using platinum, gold, and dark colours with the utmost precision, he brings out the swirling folds of Bustelli’s beautifully wrought gown. The glittering of sequins and pearls is exquisitely imitated in the painting.
After firing, the parts of the design decorated with precious metals emerge dull and matt. To bring out their shining glossiness, every part has to be burnished by hand. Just a glance at the subtlety of the lines is enough to form a clear impression of the expense involved in this phase of the work.
Individual figures are only available with Limit No. 16 – 25. It is not possible to order specific numbers. The figures will be supplied with a certificate in a gift box specially designed for the collection.
